Dhofar Governorate, Oman
As part of Oman Vision 2040, the Ministry of Health continues to invest in advanced healthcare infrastructure designed to provide high-quality, specialised services across the country. A key milestone in this initiative was the inauguration of Al Mazyouna Hospital in Dhofar Governorate—supporting a decentralised healthcare model while strengthening national health security.
To complement the hospital’s modern design and sustainability targets, an energy-efficient hot water solution was required to reliably serve a 50-bed facility while reducing operational energy demand.
The Solution: Solar Thermal Hot Water System
To meet these requirements, Al Ansari Trading Enterprise delivered and installed a solar thermal hot water system designed by A. O. Smith. The system was engineered to maximise renewable energy contribution while ensuring consistent hot water availability for healthcare operations.
System Overview
- 16 high-performance solar collectors
- 2 hot water storage tanks
- 2 modulating solar circulation pumps
- Integrated intelligent control system
Advanced System Design
The system utilises a drain-back solar thermal design, a robust and reliable approach that protects the system from overheating—a crucial consideration in Oman’s high solar gain environment.
When the storage tanks reach full temperature, the intelligent control system automatically drains the solar fluid from the collectors, preventing thermal stress and extending equipment lifespan.
Smart Controls for Efficiency
The integrated control system developed by A. O. Smith continuously monitors and optimises performance by:
- Using temperature sensors to track system conditions
- Modulating pump speeds to match heat demand
- Maximising energy transfer from collectors to storage tanks
This ensures the system operates at peak efficiency throughout the day, delivering the highest possible solar contribution to water heating.
Reliability Through Backup Integration
For healthcare environments, reliability is critical. The system includes an automatic electric backup heating solution to guarantee uninterrupted hot water supply.
If demand exceeds the stored solar-heated water capacity, the system seamlessly activates the backup heating. Additionally, programmable controls ensure sufficient hot water is available even after extended periods without solar input, such as overnight.
Driving Sustainable Healthcare Infrastructure
The installation at Al Mazyouna Hospital demonstrates how renewable energy technologies can be seamlessly integrated into critical healthcare infrastructure. By harnessing solar energy, the facility significantly reduces reliance on conventional energy sources while maintaining the high standards of reliability required in a medical environment.
This project is a strong example of how innovative, energy-efficient systems support Oman’s long-term sustainability and healthcare development goals under Vision 2040.
